Tentipi designs tents of the future supported by NX CAD and Teamcenter PLM 

Tentipi designs and manufactures tipi tents from sizes of 2 - 15 people, used by family campers and extreme exhibitions, to large, flexible tipi tents for events. The tents used for events can be connected to create any space needed for a particular happening.

Tentipi are currently present at 22 markets all over the world. Great Britain is their largest market. To maintain their position as market leaders it is important with clear communication, compliance, and to continuously launch new, innovative products of high quality. 

A year and a half ago Gustav Holmström moved 1000 kilometers från Luleå to Sunne for a position as design engineer and product developer at Tentipi. For him this has meant exciting work task at an innovative and fast moving company.  

Gustav Holmströms first mission was to sweep the market for a CAD system that could solve some of the challenges Tentipi is facing. 

"I created a “request of purchase” inquiry for purchase of a CAD system based on Tentipi’s needs today, historically and future connected to the business strategy”, says Gustav Holmström.

NX:s functions won the race

Fabric, wood and metal are the main materials in the tipi tents of Tentipi.

”Some of the most important functions for us is fabric preparation and to be able to create advanced surfaces”, says Gustav Holmström. “We also have high demands on simulation and calculations. In addition there are regulations such as ISO standards that our tipi tents need to fulfill.”

With Tentipi’s demands and expectations as basis Gustav Holmström sent several case descriptions to the larger CAD actors. They would then present their specific solutions for each case. In the end only two vendors remained that could provide a solution that matched Tentipi’s unique needs. 

”Of the two remaining solutions, NX, from Siemens Digital Industries, was the tool that met our demands to the highest degree. It was the only alternative where we did not have to buy additional plug-ins or third party products to fulfil the demands”, says Gustav Holmström.

Gustav Holmström had been in working in NX earlier when he attended the university hybrid industrial design and machine engineer. He considered it a really good, but large and complex system.

”But NX actually got cheaper in the end. With NX we did not need to purchase extra functionality or software from third party vendors. We simply got a smooth and great solution in a complete package.”


Digital process saves time and money

All product development at Tentipi was previously manual, which led to the need of creating several prototypes before a satisfactory product. 

Today, Gustav Holmström is able to quickly help his colleagues when they want to test different measures for a product. With the compilation in NX, he can measure between points to get the theoretical measures. 

“Prototypes will still be necessary in the future”, says Gustav Holmström. “It is not possible to move directly from a digital model to production. But with NX it is possible to work with digital versions further along in the process. The number of physical adjustments and prototypes will decrease with a digital model to test on.” 

The big event tents are complicated and it is expensive to build full scale prototypes of them. Tentipi saves both time and money with digital twins to test on.

The tools for design and production are future proofed with NX”, says Gustav Holmström. “We have already created drawings of metal parts that would have been hard to define and test without the possibility to draw them digitally.

We have also bought a 3D printer to be able to manufacture and test physical models before we for example order a mold. In addition, NX helps us with our wind simulations to guarantee the security for those who are in the tents.” 

 

 

“So far I have created 3D models and built a library with our existing products. This way we can reuse previous constructions and ensure that the material and the modules fit.” 

Long term strategy with Teamcenter PLM

Gustav Holmström sees huge opportunities with the continued digitalisation at Tentipi with NX and Teamcenter.

“Next step is to connect product documentation and design in Teamcenter. We will start with PDM and let Teamcenter handle the CAD files”, says Gustav Holmström. “An advantage with Teamcenter is the opportunity to connect more parts of the company operations such as for instance support and storage. The prospect to simplify cooperation with our colleagues in China is also attractive.”

“With NX and Teamcenter we will be able to increase efficiently and launch new, innovative products on the market at a faster pace”, concludes Gustav Holmström.
